Cataclysm Looming Nearer

Just a quick note on Blizzard’s release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, this evening.

After being snowed in for the last week, I ended up playing Wow all weekend. Last night my partner & I were contemplating which professions our new characters would do, when we play Cataclysm tomorrow. I’m hoping this snow won’t deter the mailman from getting our pre-ordered copies to us today! I think I might go to sleep as soon as I get home… and start playing at midnight when the servers go live… dedicated to the game or sad?

I’ll go with dedicated. I’m glad that I can still get excited about a game, as an adult, as I did when I was a kid :)

Happy hunting!

Samsung Galaxy Tab

Walked into a few mobile phone stores this weekend and was totally awestruck by the Samsung Galaxy tablet. I had a play with it for a while and almost bought one right then and there. This is Samsung’s first internet tablet and although I think it’s a pretty good device, a lot of negative reviews have been made regarding various aspects of it.

I like the 7-inch TFT LCD with 1024 x 600 resolution, it gives a nice crisp picture when viewing videos (in HD) and photos and the readers hub incorporates an e-book reader and on a screen this size, personally think will make for a great alternative to e-readers. You can either get a 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, but I’m quite pleased that they’ve added a microSD expansion slot, to allow up to 32GB of additional storage.

The rear 3 megapixel camera which has video recording as well, is definitely a nice addition to an internet tablet, even more so that you can edit your photos and videos as well. As far as megapixels go, this is obviously not that much and you’d still most likely be using your conventional digital camera for better quality, but while on the go, this definitely makes a much more convenient solution, rather than having to use a camera or mobile phone to take a quick snap you intend to share (or edit), if you’ve already got the Galaxy tab out. They’ve also added a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, allowing for video calling, which is a feature most other tablets do not offer.

It has basically, everything that your mobile phone does, well the Samsung Galaxy tab has one feature which other tablets don’t, I think giving it a bit of an edge and that is mobile phone capabilities. When you buy the Galaxy tab on contract, you get a monthly internet usage and some also offer texts or minutes and texts. Now, if you do intend to use any minutes on it, then you don’t have to worry about holding such a large device to your ear, you will be able to use Bluetooth headsets with the tab. Of course, you might ask why would you use an internet tablet as a phone… good question, when I come up with a valid, believable and totally necessary excuse, perhaps my better half will finally say yes when I ask if I can get one  But I digress, yes, the Galaxy tab is a device like all other tablets, it’s a great gadget to have, but ultimately, one which I suppose isn’t really always a necessary accessory. I mean, your mobile phone does everything, except perhaps for the video and photo editing and obviously it’s easier to browse with a bigger screen, but if you can afford it and you love gadgets, owning an internet tablet is something you’ll want to.

Browsing on the Galaxy tab is really quite enjoyable, it’s fast and smooth and it supports Adobe Flash 10. It uses Android 2.2 operating system, if you aren’t familiar with Android, it’s easy to get use to, quite user friendly and it is not ‘laggy’. You can buy an additional keyboard for the tab, and as the tab has a built in dock connector, you can actually dock it on the keyboard.

A definite replacement for my netbook I think, Android has some nice features that I enjoy and there is a large number of free apps you can load onto it. Making the Galaxy tab not only a very useful device but fun too.

Happy shopping!

Blackberry Style 9670

So one thing I have always loved about mobile phones, are flip phones (or flippy phones as I like to refer to them), but oddly enough, have never actually had one of my very own. Being a big Blackberry fan, I was quite delighted when RIM announced the Blackberry Style 9670, which is RIM’s first Blackberry flip phone.

The phone itself looks really good, it seems to be a good fit in your hand, not too bulky but still a nice 2.7 inch display. I’m glad they kept the full QWERTY keyboard, instead of going Pearl style… QWERTY keyboard it seems, has become one of my top must haves for any phone. And preferably a hard keyboard, as opposed to touch screen only. As yet, I have never used the optical trackpad on a Blackberry, I prefer the trackball, and I think it might take some getting use to, but ultimately it’s just another of those things you eventually do adapt to.

A 5mp camera, which is still bigger than my Storm 2’s camera, isn’t the top camera out there, but sufficient I think. I mean, we’d all like RIM to give their Blackberries better camera’s, but 5mp seems an improvement. It has the new Blackberry OS 6 (operating system), which boasts some nice features for it’s users. Some people have complained that the Blackberry Torch is too bulky, it’s heavy and too big when the keyboard’s open. I do wish they had put the QWERTY keyboard on the side instead of the bottom. But I think the Blackberry Style makes for a nice alternative if you think the Torch is too bulky.
