Hot Gadgets of 2008

Sunday, March 02, 2008

Thought I’d do a little article on what I think 2008 is gona bring for us, gadget wise. Mostly, I think it’s based on a pretty predictable curve in technology in general, some on a little inside scoop and some, perhaps on a little wishful thinking

Televisions

Well, not in some parts of the world, where technology is totally dominated by ruthless governments, but TV’s are definitely becoming better and cheaper. I’m sure this year will bring us bigger, better and thinner models. I remember when we bought our first flat screen TV, a few years back, it wasn’t terribly expensive, but for that price now, we can get one double in size and half it’s width!

I’ve been giving the whole touch screen some thought. I don’t think that will happen this year, but I do suspect that the future will bring with it an interactive and / or touch screen TV for home users.

Mobile Phones

Well last year, there’s no question, the iPhone had the most hype, most anticipated and it actually lived up to all the fuss. A great phone for sure, I’m having a hard time believing that any other phone is going to live up to it. Well, except for the LG Viewty which I personally love, but still, all the latest and greatest mobiles are pretty much the same now. I’m curious to see what the next step will be for the mobile phone trend. I think they might come in all sorts of shapes and sizes this year, something like the C1000 Golf Watch – Touch Screen Watch Phone, a very cool gadget which I’m sure has captured the hearts of geeks everywhere. But yeah, I think that they should step up and start making those real 007 spy type of phones now, ones so small you could hide it, I dunno, in your tooth?

Computers

Oh wow, I don’t even know if I could write a quick paragraph on what I think is coming over the next year. I mean, just the word ‘computers’ is a pretty broad topic. As for computers themselves, bigger and better, like always. Or in the case of laptops, smaller and lighter But I think they’ve already taken a huge leap with the magnetized liquid computer adapted for vision impaired people and I am really hoping to see this take off. Technology should definitely be beefed up to help those who can’t take advantage of it like a fully abled person.
I think right now the biggest component of computers is probably hard drives. They are most definitely cheaper, as are all PC parts I suppose, but we’re finally getting into Terabyte territory. I definitely think that this year, perhaps later on, 1TB HDD will be just as affordable as a 500GB. I hope so anyway, I have 980GB all together and it’s just not enough

And as far as operating systems go, I’ve always been a Windows user, for a number of reasons I won’t go into now and I just hope that Microsoft comes up with something better than that load of crap they called Vista.

Robots

Oh man, a topic which always gets me on the edge of my seat. I’m very excited about WowWee Rovio Robot which is being released soon and honestly think that we’re on the brink of incorporating robots into the common persons day to day life. They just need to keep at it, brining us better and better stuff. I guess it’s a little too early to hope for anything really big, but I think a robot which you can control from anywhere in the world, with a built in mic and webcam, is a good start
