Laser Mouse

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Best thing that could have happened to PC peripherals, I think, is the optical mouse. I use to work at an internet cafe and having to clean those little balls in the old mice was extremely time consuming - which cut out time for my precious gaming! And speaking of, as one of the only girls gaming in my home town, I needed every advantage and those few valuable seconds you'd waste getting into the game because the ball in the mouse would momentarily get stuck, was a vital part of my strategy... which was ultimately speed. Optical mice definitely brought in a new feel to gaming. Although, as they always do, this new and brave technology had one or two drawbacks, nothing major, but that brief lag when you moved it over a different coloured surface. One of my dear friends was telling me a couple of years back, he didn't have the heart to tell his girlfriend that the reason he put a blank piece of paper under his mouse was because the optical couldn't run smoothly on a multi coloured surface and even though her love note she left on it for him was endearing, it frustrated his mouse usage. He never did replace it or tell her about it either.

So what do we have now? The next generation of computer mice, laser. With precision laser tracking, the laser mouse is a dream to use. It's not only faster and smoother than optical, but it runs on any surface. And I do mean any. We bought one for our laptop and the thing actually works on my bedspread. My bedspread! I don't actually use my bed covers though (too soft), I usually just grab any small box lying around and it doesn't matter that it's covered with pictures and labels.

I know what some of you might be thinking, the difference is minimal and isn't worth the pricy new laser mouse. Imagine my surprise when I realized that the prices finally dropped some and now costs about the same as an optical. So get out there, today, now and buy yourself one. It's the perfect accessory for anyone who's as gadget crazed as me

It's still a little hard to part with my six button, USB optical mouse that took me so long to find, as I am extremely finicky about these things. So I've settled to using the laser mouse for our laptop, which as it's mobile, will be handy when used in tricky places. But I do look forward to upgrading my desktop mouse again. It'll definitely be laser, have more than five buttons, be USB and I'm thinking of going wireless. Although I'm not too sure about the wireless yet, that's something I still need to explore. And when I do, you'll be the first to know!

Happy shopping!
