Ultra-Mobile PC

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

When asked why I want the Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC), seeing as I have a desk top, laptop and I work from home, the obvious answer is ‘duh, it’s a MOBILE PC !’ An all time must have for the gadget lover in you. The Ultra-Mobile PC also known by its codename Project Origami, first came to my attention the beginning of the year, before its release. They were showing it off at a gadget show and I immediately fell in love with it. It’s small, light weight and enables you to carry it with you anywhere you go, without the hassle of a heavy lap top carry case. Nothing against lap tops mind you.

Ultra-Mobile PC’s have touch sensitive screens, around 20cm or 7inch. The Ultra-Mobile PC is just a platform, manufacturers can design any model into it (meeting the specifications laid out for it), but most Ultra-Mobile PC’s are capable of running full version of most operating systems. It should run any software that was written for Windows XP, given some changes in the interface though.

The Ultra-Mobile PC has a virtual keyboard, which are known as DialKeys. This is provided in the Touch Pack Interface. It features a USB 2.0 connection, so you can still add external devices such as keyboards or mice, if you don’t feel like on the couch playing around with it or if your hand cramps up It supports a wide range of devices such as memory cards, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, TV tuners, speakers, webcams and finger print readers. In addition to having the processing power to support audio and video, it also supports gaming. It incldues include Windows Media Player, with a design created especially to make it easy to use on a small screen. Ultra-Mobile PC’s are even upgrading to include Windows Vista next year.

There are many different Ultra-Mobile PC’s, each with its own specifications. There are also many accessories specifically for the Ultra-Mobile PC platform. Some include screen protectors, carry cases, docking stations, styli and protective bump cases. There will also be mounting features for the Ultra-Mobile PC, to enable you to mount it in your car or to an adjustable arm on the wall. The possibilities are endless!

Happy Shopping!
