Wi-Fi

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

We've only recently switched to a wireless broadband connection, right after we bought our laptop. I always figured it would be a waste of money, seeing as the standard cable and hub connection always worked fine. For around £60 you can buy a wireless ADSL router which will also include a wireless dongle. As it turned out, Wi-Fi is not only great because it's easy and has requires less cables, but you can hook up so many of your other favourite gadgets to it as well. After having my Sony PSP for a couple of months and then finally getting the wireless, I was so excited to finally be able to test out the internet on my Sony PSP, but as it turned out my Wi-Fi switch on the Sony PSP is busted and after so much time has passed, cannot return it. But as soon as I get it working, it will be cool. Also managed to get my Mini XDA on the wireless now as well. Took a little while, to get the settings right but it's not working without a hitch. So the mornings I feel too tired or sick to get out of bed, I just stay in and reach for my Mini XDA to start messenger, email and all the other blissful bits I do online every day

We now have a wireless local area network (WLAN) set up at home, which we use for gaming as well. WLAN is based on IEEE 802.11 specifications. It was first developed for mobile computing, in LANS, but is now being used more and more for other services such as VoIP, gaming, Internet connections and is being used in other devices such as DVD players, digital cameras and TV's. I think the future holds a whole new world of technology thanks to Wi-Fi.

When on the move, a Wi-Fi enabled device such as a PC, Mini XDA, mobile phone or Sony PSP can connect to the Internet when in proximity of an access point. The region covered by access points is called a hotspot. Hotspots can range from a single room to many square miles of overlapping hotspots.

Wi-Fi also allows connectivity in peer-to-peer mode, which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connectivity mode is useful in consumer electronics and gaming applications.

Wi-Fi is becoming more useful in the gaming world as well. The Nintendo DS handheld is Wi-Fi compatible. The Sony PSP also includes wireless, as I already mentioned. You can buy a wireless network adaptor for the Xbox 360. Playstation 3 premium model will feature built-in Wi-Fi and the all elusive Wii also features Wi-Fi.

Sometimes hard to waste so much money on something which you might not really need or even don’t really understand, but once you have it, you won’t know how you lived without it! A must have for anyone in this day and age. I am very pleased my wireless internet connection at home

Happy Shopping!
