Magnetic Floating Bed
Wednesday, August 22, 2007I remember reading about the magnetic floating bed while on my way to work one morning. Of course it caught my attention. Who wouldn’t want a floating bed in the middle of their room?
The magnetic floating bed was designed by Jajapp Ruijssenaars, a Dutch architect, who used a magnetic force to keep this bed afloat. There are enough magnets to create a force which could hold up to 1984 pounds or 900 kg’s, while still staying afloat. Test this by asking 10 of your friends to sit on the bed and see when it eventually starts to sag. There are magnets built into the floor and into the bed itself, which repel each other, creating the hovering effect. The only problem with having a bed magnetically hovering over the ground, is that it could easily be bumped, and float off. So to keep the magnetic floating bed in one place, it’s tethered by four steel cables to the walls. It’s advised that people with piercing’s avoid the magnetic field between the bed and the floor, but should be safe enough for sleeping on the bed itself. To be honest, if it was me, I wouldn’t put myself between the floor and any object if the only keeping them apart was something I couldn’t see… but that’s just me

The bed is apparently not very comfortable, not like your conventional mattress and needs bedding and cushions before it’s ready to be slept in. Due to the size of the bed and the steel cables stretching from it’s corners, the magnetic floating bed needs an exceptionally large room. Alternatively, the magnetic floating bed can also be used as a plinth. Turn it into a dinning room table or any platform or podium for that matter. Although it’ll probably be the most expensive thing you’ve ever dined on

Jajapp Ruisjssenaars tok 60 years to design this bed, which is now worth around £800 000, affordable only to the filthy rich. Mr Ruisjssenaars is selling a model of the magnetic floating bed for £80 000 and is only willing to build the full sized magnetic floating bed once a paying customer places an order. The mini, model of the magnetic floating bed has been said to probably be the world’s most expensive cat bed
If this type of magnetically hovering furniture ever becomes affordable to the common working class, I’ll have to finally move my PC out of my bedroom
